Mentor Rotary Bread Day
The first Mentor Rotary Bread Day was held in September
of 1998 and was the brain child of Mentor Rotarian David Noble. Dave
who was President of the club approached then owner of The Great
Harvest Bread Co. Randy Verdi, who graciously agreed to the concept of
utilizing the sale of their fresh bread as a fund raiser and Mentor
Rotary Bread Day became a reality.
Mentor Rotary Bread Day is now an annual event that would not be
possible without the total co-operation and generosity of first Randy
Verdi, then his successor Frank Spontelli, and now the present
owners of The Great Harvest Bread Co., Jeff and Heidi Clark. Located
in downtown Mentor The Great Harvest Bread Co. is well known in the
area for the fresh baked bread that is prepared daily on site.
Normally closed on Mondays, owners Jeff & Heidi give up their day off,
and turn their store over to the Mentor Rotary Club for a Monday in
September. Mentor Rotarians pre-sell 1,200 to 1,300 loaves of bread
yearly for this event. The day begins at 6:00 A.M. to knead, bake, bag
and deliver the bread, under the strict supervision of the owners. All
of the proceeds from this fund raiser go to the Mentor Rotary
Foundation, which supports our Leukemia Plus and Bone Marrow Donation
program, student scholarships, drama awards, and other community based
projects. Since the inception of this great fund raiser, the Mentor
Rotary and The Great Harvest Bread Co. have together raised almost
$49,000.00, of which all goes back into the Mentor area community.
